Pristina is committed to re-opening the Ibar bridge – between the Serbian and the Albanian part of Kosovska Mitrovica – as soon as possible, yet does not want the move to catch its European and American partners by surprise, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated on Aug. 19.
In an interview for the Voice of America, Kurti went on to say that the bridge should be open to traffic and should never have been shut down “when Kosovo was liberated 25 years ago.”
“It shouldn’t have stayed closed when Kosovo gained independence 16 years ago. It should have been opened eight years ago based on the Brussels Agreement and Implementation Plan. We’ve been late three times, and for many years,” Kurti explained.
He concluded by claiming that an agreement regarding the bridge was reached in Brussels and that there is nothing left to discuss on the matter.
