Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians leader Balint Pastor on Sept. 24 said his party was against reinstating mandatory military service in Serbia, recalling that in 2010, he had hailed the decision by the Serbian Parliament to scrap mandatory military service.
Speaking to Subotica-based Hungarian Radio, Pastor said that on Sept. 16, the party leadership had concluded that although the party did not have enough MPs in the Serbian Parliament to prevent adoption of the subject law, it would try to secure privileges for ethnic Hungarians.
He also said that no war would break out in Serbia and that the Government had not recommended reinstating mandatory military service over the situation in Kosovo, but rather due to the trends in the region. “I understand why Serbian President (Aleksandar Vucic) suggested reinstating mandatory military service, but our party is still not happy about that, because it could encourage local ethnic Hungarians to leave the country,” Pastor specified.
Pastor also said he would try to ensure the possibility for doing military service also outside army barracks, adding he believed that Serbia should join NATO.
