Whichever way the upcoming presidential election in the US goes, Washington’s role in the Western Balkans will diminish, meaning that this region, struggling with unresolved conflicts and halted integration processes, would require a more serious engagement of the European Union (EU) and Germany, according to researchers at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), a prominent Germany foreign policy research institute.
DGAP analysts Milan Nic and Frauke Seebass believe that if Republican candidate Donald Trump wins the presidential vote on Nov. 5, it would mean a considerable break-up with the current US policy in the Western Balkans.
In case the election goes in favor of Trump, the former US president (2017-2021), some of the Balkan leaders, in particular Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, will have more access and high-level contacts in Washington compared to previous years, according to Nic and Seebass.
