The nominee for the post of European commissioner for enlargement, Marta Kos, the former ambassador of Slovenia, has stated that, if appointed, she would work on finding solutions to bilateral disputes so that they would not impede the candidate countries’ European integration, and that she would not hesitate to recommend corrective measures in cases of stagnation or regression in reforms.

In a written response to the questions of the European Parliament’s committees, which is part of the process of appointment of the commissioner, Kos pointed out that bilateral issues, either between the candidate countries or with the EU members, had caused significant delays in the past.

While stressing that regional cooperation in the Western Balkans was the key element of the Stabilization and Association Agreement and at the center of the Growth Plan, Kos stated that she would use her mandate, if confirmed, to work on regional integration, good neighborly relations and reconciliation.

She underscored that she would firmly support the merit-based approach, that there were no shortcuts to membership, that every candidate country would be evaluated independently and that the overall tempo of negotiations would depend on progress in the rule of law, respect of human rights, independence of the judiciary and the fight against corruption and organized crime.
