Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic assessed on Nov. 6 that the victory of Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election represented “a change that brings hope” for Serbia, adding that he expected good relations and continued cooperation.
Speaking at a news conference after a meeting with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Vucic said that he was among the first to congratulate Trump and that he spoke early in the morning with Trump’s closest associates and that “90 percent of Serbia’s population was hoping for a Trump victory because of the events of 1999.”
He added that Serbia and the U.S. maintained good relations, that friendship with the Trump administration had been preserved, but that he certainly did not expect any “tectonic changes” in the two countries’ relations. “Globally, I expect Trump to attempt to restore peace in Ukraine. Until only yesterday, the talk was about either side winning and nobody spoke about peace. I am convinced that the American president – and I know that first hand – will offer and seek a solution,” Vucic stated.
He pointed out that it would not be easy for Serbia to keep up with the challenging times, because the U.S. recognizes China as its adversary and Serbia will be under pressure to reduce relations with China.
