Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic laid a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Hero at Mt. Avala on Nov. 11 in honor of the national holiday Armistice Day.
Vucevic's entry into the memorial book reads that an entire generation ended their lives for Serbia. Minister without Portfolio Nenad Popovic said that Serbia and Russia had given the greatest contributions to the Allied victory, noting that they had the highest number of casualties.
Popovic laid a wreath at the Belgrade Novo Groblje cemetery's memorial ossuary, which holds the remains of Russian soldiers killed in World War I. "Serbia does not want any wars. It wants to develop in peace, but has always known how to protect and guard its people and freedom, and that you don't turn your back on your friends in hard times," Popovic said.
The ambassadors of Russia, Belarus, Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko and Sergey Malinovsky, also brought flowers to the Novo Groblje cemetery. The commemoration included a religious service for the fallen soldiers, playing the anthems of Serbia and Russia, and an art and culture program.
