More than 1,100 members of the academic and scientific community signed a petition on Dec. 7 supporting the demands of university students in Serbia.
The petition reads that the students' protest have called attention to violations of civic rights, including intimidation, illegal arrests, unjustified detention and incomprehensible actions by public prosecutors both against their colleagues and against other citizens demanding accountability for the Nov. 1 collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad railway station, which claimed 15 lives.
"As university and science workers, we support the demands of the students of a number of university schools in Serbia. We believe that solidarity and justice are key to creating a good society and that students have always been those who to defend them with the most heart, providing a crucial impetus. We therefore give our support to democratic organizing and the students' demands, stressing the urgency of them being met," the petition reads.
