Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said in Belgrade on Jan. 11 that U.S. sanctions against the Serbian NIS oil company were not directed against Serbia, but that this was cold comfort, and stressed that Serbia would make reasonable decisions and not seize Russian assets.
"Over the next seven to ten days we have to clarify with the Americans what the sanctions entail exactly, so that we can then speak with the Russians," Vucic said in a joint address with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma after their meeting at the Presidency building.
Vucic said the sanctions were imposed in a very complicated way, should the new U.S. administration want to lift them. On the topic of the agreement on strategic dialogue, Vucic said it would not resolve all of the differences between the two countries, especially when it came to Kosovo, but that it opened new opportunities for Serbia and the U.S.
