President of the European Council Antonio Costa stated on Jan. 22 that the European Union was fully committed to its further enlargement and that it was time for it to fulfill its promises, like the membership candidate countries do.

“We are fully committed to enlargement as the greatest geopolitical investment into peace and security, for our people and our continent,” Costa said in his first address of the European Parliament since being assigned to the post of European Council president. Costa said that the six countries of the Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova were working hard on fulfilling their obligations.

“Without a doubt, the future of these countries lies in our Union. It is time that we fulfill our promises, like they fulfill theirs,” Costa said at the plenary session of the European Parliament. In his words, commitment to enlargement is one of the three key messages from the first summit of the European Council, which he presided over in December.
