On Feb. 13, the Democratic Party announced that there is no room for any kind of negotiations with the regime until the demands of the protesting university students are met, adding that now is not the time to discuss an interim government or elections – or to participate in the National Assembly of Serbia.
“The Democratic Party will not allow the regime’s cosmetic campaign, [its] insincere crackdown on crime and corruption [and] the arrests of side players to overshadow the fulfillment of the university students’ demands,” the press release reads.
According to the Democrats, what is needed is more pressure on the authorities to meet said demands. Until that happens, the statement said, no other matters will be discussed.
“The university students are more powerful than [President of Serbia] Aleksandar Vucic! Far more Serbian citizens believe that the students are those defending state interests, than those who believe Vucic is doing so! Today, the university plenums have immeasurably more legitimacy than the National Assembly. Therefore, Serbia can begin moving forward only after the university plenums have determined that the student demands have been met,” the Democratic Party concluded in its statement.
