Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric visited the Yad Vashem memorial complex in Jerusalem on Feb. 19, stating that, throughout history, the Serb people had stood side by side with the Jewish people and that Serbia, together with Israel, would nurture the memory of the Holocaust victims and oppose every form of revision of history, the Foreign Ministry has stated.

Djuric recollected that this year marked 80 years since the defeat of fascism and Nazism, adding that this was one more reason to nurture the culture of remembrance and responsibility for preserving the memory of the victims and of the evil that has been done, but also for understanding the ideology that had led to the Holocaust.

“As a descendant of Holocaust survivors, I am proud to come from a country where there were many who helped the Jews survive World War II, which is why Serbia is among the countries, and the Serb people among those nations with the highest number of individuals who were awarded the Righteous Among the Nations decoration,” stated the Serbian foreign minister. He also recollected that “on the initiative of President Aleksandar Vucic, Serbia has repaid the Holocaust victims by returning their nationalized property to their descendants.”

He reiterated that Serbia would continue to stand alongside Israel, by nurturing the memory of the Holocaust victims and by dismissing the revision of history. “The marking of eight decades since the liberation of the Jasenovac concentration camp places before us an obligation to be united in dismissing the revision of history and in insisting that the education curricula contain sufficient and accurate information about what happened during the Second World War,” Djuric stated.
