On March 4, a majority vote by the Serbian National Assembly allowed a higher education bill, submitted by the Cabinet, to be added to the agenda per urgent procedure.
The proposal was supported by 144 MPs, while one abstained and 52 refused to vote.
Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said that the bill in question “fulfills the fourth demand of the [protesting] university students,” i.e. the request for higher university funding.
Green-Left Front MP Radomir Lazovic previously stated that the only agenda item the Parliament should discuss is “fulfilling the university students’ demands and recognizing the Cabinet’s resignation.” “That is the addition to the agenda proposed by the Green-Left Front and our colleagues from the opposition,” he said.
At the beginning of the sitting, opposition MPs put up signs saying ‘General Strike’, ‘You’ve Got Blood on Your Hands’ and ‘Educators, We Stand with You.’
The National Assembly of Serbia’s regular spring session commenced on March 4 with a sitting that is supposed to recognize Prime Minister Milos Vucevic’s resignation, submitted on Jan. 28.
The agenda for the day comprises 62 items. At the opening of the meeting, the opposition contested the schedule, arguing against the outgoing Cabinet proposing so many items and important bills as well as the plan to hold a general, overall debate regarding the agenda in its entirety.
Certain opposition parliamentary groups announced that they will not participate in the Assembly’s operation but would stage their own activities. At the same time, regime and opposition caucuses have called a total of 20 press conferences.
