Zoran Djajic, one of the engineers hired under the reconstruction project for Novi Sad’s central railway station said on March 10 that the authorities had yet to release the documentation clarifying the process in which Chinese contractors had hired subcontractors, along with  financial records.

Djajic explained that the records would make it possible to find out how, exactly, the cost of the reconstruction project had jumped from the initial three million euros to EUR16 million.

“The authorities should also clarify the role President Aleksandar Vucic had had in terms of the money flows surrounding the reconstruction of the railway station building, given that a former construction minister, Goran Vesic, the president’s chief of staff, Ivica Kojic, and Natasa Vuksic, Vucic’s close aide had managed the project on  his behalf, financial transactions included. This is also the main reason why the government refuses to meet the students' first demand – to release  complete documentation,” Djajic said in an interview for BETA.

In a comment on Vucic’s claim that the station canopy had collapsed due to professional negligence rather than corruption, Djajic was explicit that the reasons the canopy had collapsed were irresponsible contractors and corruption.
