Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric on April 29 said he had informed his Austrian counterpart Beate Meinl-Reisinger about Serbia’s efforts to overcome its domestic political problems and to nurture a dialogue in the country, adding they had also talked about Serbia’s EU path and the country’s determination to pursue reforms and economic growth.
“We talked about the extraordinary economic relations the two countries have established in the previous period, including the fact that Austria has become one of contributors to the accelerated economic development of the region and Serbia,” Djuric told reporters. They also discussed the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, and the problems that had been triggered, he said, by Pristina’s unilateral actions.
After the meeting, Beate Meinl-Reisinger said Austria considered the partnership with Serbia as very important, adding that Austrian companies provided 24,000 jobs in Serbia.
Meinl-Reisinger also said she had come to Belgrade as part of Austrian Government’s mission to support the Balkan countries in their effort to join the EU. She added that the accession process required a lot of effort from Serbian, noting that Austria could see Serbia’s “determination to establish the rule of law and democracy.” The Austrian minister also noted that “there are periods, like the present time, when polarization deepens, but it is exactly when we should keep the engine running and also the intensity of the dialogue”.
