Srdjan Milivojevic, the president of the oppositional Democratic Party, said on May 4 that his party will support the country’s protesting university students should they decide to run for Parliament.

Milivojevic explained that the Democrats will offer “all [their] capacities, knowledge and infrastructure” to the students, should the youths who have been blockading their schools for six months now, decide that participating in a snap election is the best way forward.

“If the students determine that entering into elections is the [best] way to combat [the ongoing] violence, repression and the destruction of [state] institutions, the Democrats will stand with them,” the party head said in guest appearance on Nova S TV’s Utisak Nedelje (The Impressions of the Week) talk show, the Democratic Party announced on May 5.

According to the politician, while the students have demonstrated “responsibility, dignity and strength” with their “courageous and persevering” protests, they “must not be left to their own devices in this fight.” “The students are standing up not only for their demands, but for the future of this country. If they decide to become politically active via elections, our job is to support them,” Milivojevic concluded.
