The oppositional Serbian Center party stated on May 28 that the planned construction of a natural gas power plant in Nis is incompatible with Serbia’s path toward EU accession and labelled the project yet another instance of the regime “hurtling the country downhill.”

“The Nis natural gas power plant project is pointless if we still want to join the EU. The matter is different entirely if we’ve given up on that path – or, perhaps, the regime believes it can use its ubiquitous ‘Do you know who I am?’ approach with the EU as well,” the party wrote in its statement.

The press release pointed out that, in February, Serbia signed an agreement with Azerbaijan for the construction of said power plant, on occasion of which President Aleksandar Vucic “awkwardly yet enthusiastically” announced the arrival of the “era of electrical energy.”

The Serbia Center party said the key issue is whether Serbia intends to align its legislation with European Union’s power industry regulations, given that, according to said regulations, the Nis natural gas power plant will cease being acceptable in 2035.
