Ana Brnabic (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)
Serbia’s Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said on May 18 that the country does not need the snap elections the protesting university students have requested, adding that a vote will be called “when it is due.”
She went on to state that the final decision on the matter will be made by President Aleksandar Vucic, since it is solely under his purview.
“I don’t see that we need [elections]. I do see that the only authority in charge of the matter isn’t eager to meet this demand, and am glad it is so,” Brnabic stated.
In her opinion, the university students who have been blockading their schools for six months now should take up politics off campus.
Brnabic said she has nothing against the students entering politics, but insisted they should do so in rented spaces, leaving schools “to the people and state, to serve as temples of knowledge.”
