Rector Vladan Djokic (BETAPHOTO/MILAN OBRADOVIC)
Serbian Parliament speaker Ana Brnabic on May 20 said that University of Belgrade Rector Vladan Djokic had agreed in writing to be on an election ticket backed by the protesting students for a potential parliamentary election.
“By putting his signature, he confirmed that the rector, certain deans and professors have abused the autonomy of the university in order to get hold of power by abusing both, the protesting students and those who want to study,” Brnabic wrote on her X account. Brnabic added she was expecting Djokic to also sign his irrevocable resignation and step down as University of Belgrade rector.
Commenting on Brnabic’s statement, the Freedom and Justice Party has said that Serbian Progressive Party official Ana Brnabic failed to react when Nenad Filipovic, the former University of Kragujevac rector, had been on the Progressives’ ticket, while she was now being hysterical about Djokic having agreed to be included on the students-backed election ticket.
“She has labeled him for ‘political activity,’ pushing him to resign, referring to the law. And what happed with this strong concern for the law and the autonomy of universities when then rector of the University of Kragujevac headed the Progressives’ ticket in the 2023 local elections in Kragujevac. He was listed first on the ticket. It was a political party ticket. The Progressives’ ticket,” the party said, noting that back then the law was irrelevant, while there was also no mention of the autonomy of the University.
