The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) appealed on the police on Aug. 28 for its special units to allow journalists to freely report from rallies, especially during police interventions.

Commenting on the Aug. 27 clash in front of the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, during which “the police prevented journalists from working,” ANEM assessed that the police “once again acted inadequately toward the students, citizens and journalists.”

“Journalists were prevented from staying behind the (police) cordon, from where they are able to report professionally and without obstruction, which was not prohibited previously. Once again, they were exposed to police pushing and hitting them with their shields and to shock grenades and other explosive devices used by the Gendarmerie,” ANEM declared in the statement, adding that obstruction of journalists was “a clear indicator of a desire to conceal something.”

“At the gathering in front of the Faculty of Philosophy, a member of the Gendarmerie instructed the cameraman and a journalist of N1 television to turn off the light on the camera, which is necessary for night recording. They were told they would be arrested if they did not comply,” ANEM stated.
