Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had been personally in charge of repressive measures against citizens and students, Momir Stojanovic, the former chief of the Military Security Agency (VBA), said on Sept. 9.

“Frequent appearances of the Serbian president, whose powers do not include running the Interior Ministry, show that he personally directs measures and actions against citizens and students,” Stojanovic told Belgrade daily Nova.

He also said that the regime’s biggest problem was to appoint loyal people at important posts, adding that the regime was controlling institutions through a parallel system in the security services and would continue with repression and replacement of personnel.

“Aside from the ministers and incumbent top officials in Serbia, Vucic also has his own people whose task is to control the institutions, although they do not hold the highest ranking posts,” Stojanovic said.
