The president of the People’s Party, Vladimir Gajic, has submitted to the Parliament of Serbia an initiative for calling Chief Public Prosecutor Zagorka Dolovac to account for the “dysfunctional” prosecutorial system.

Having supported the move with 32, 000 signatures on Sept. 15, he spoke to the press outside the Parliament building, explaining that Dolovac’s dismissal was “one of the few political issues over which there is a solid consensus,” underlining that the initiative had been signed by the voters of the opposition, the ruling coalition and neutral citizens alike.

Gajic warned that in the wake of the events in Serbia over the past few months, the prosecution was in a state of “professional collapse.”

“Zagorka Dolovac has been in office for 15 years, and citizens do not remember her for a single major case to have served the citizens. On the contrary, there have been many failures, and foreign influences are influencing lead prosecutors as well. Until just a few months ago, a representative of the U.S. Department of Justice was seated on the same floor where the Chief Prosecutor’s Office was,” Gajic said.

The opposition party’s leader explained that under the Constitution of Serbia the legislature could not “remove the chief prosecutor alone,” but that after a debate and a form of political pressure, the High Prosecutorial Council could be prompted to make such a motion.
