Marko Djuric (BETAPHOTO/Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
Following an unofficial dinner in Brussels hosted by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on Nov. 19, Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric stated that the event showed European Union enlargement has gained “some momentum,” which entails strengthening the EU as a project in its own right.
This offers Serbia an opportunity to achieve its goals in that area, Djuric said following the dinner, which included the foreign ministers of EU members and of the Union’s Western Balkan partners, the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
Djuric said he had the chance to present all of Serbia’s reform and economic potential as well as everything the country has done in the last two or three months to additionally accelerate the reforms it has been implementing on its path to EU membership and to strengthen its society’s overall capacities. “We wanted to show everything Serbia can actually contribute to the European community,” the minister explained.
He added that the dinner’s attendees also discussed large-scale geopolitical topics, with the situation in Ukraine at the fore, but that the EU members also demonstrated “growing awareness of the need for Europe to increase its cohesion and level of unity and to accelerate the inclusion of [Western Balkan] countries in Europe’s boundaries.”
“Particular emphasis,” Djuric said, was put on strengthening infrastructure, ties and good neighborly cooperation in the region, and on creating the prospect of political stability and longer-term sustainability for younger generations, encouraging them to stay local, the statement concluded.
