Slovak President Peter Pellegrini said in Belgrade, on Dec. 21 that the process of European Union enlargement and the admission of Western Balkan countries was largely a political matter.
Opening clusters is a political game. I know I will be criticized, but if someone meets the conditions, then they are ready. Countries that have given promises are now changing their stance. The Union should operate on the basis of facts and should not introduce politics in the process, Pellegrini told reporters after meeting with his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic.
According to him, if Serbian citizens see EU enlargement as a political matter, they will stop trusting the process. It would be a mistake for the EU, because it is not behaving in accordance with standards, but based on politics, which can be seen in its attitude toward Serbia, Pellegrini, who is scheduled to visit the Slovak community in Vojvodina, said on Dec. 22.
Vucic said Serbia was ready to open Cluster 3 four years ago. "We are expected to be politically suitable. We are still on the European path and I hope that with the help of friends we will succeed. We will continue to work, but I don't expect changes in the EU," Vucic said.
