Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijevic said on Feb. 11 that up to 500,000 structures would be registered in the first six months of enforcement of new legislation on real property ownership registration.

She told the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation that the first stage of the project of registering ownership over unpermitted structures had been completed successfully and that eligible citizens would be issued decisions in the order of applying. Excluding publicly owned structures, 2.5 million applications were submitted.

Sofronijevic explained that there were another million to million and a half structures owned by municipalities, cities or the state, so the majority of existing structures would be included. "The deadline for applying has expired. We are entering phase two -- the 30-day complaint window, which is followed by issuing decisions," she said.

According to assessments, some 74 percent of applications are for family and auxiliary structures.
