A petition-signing drive to demand extraordinary local elections began in Nis on April 4, and over the Easter holidays people will be able to sign the petition online on thenovagenracija.rs website, People's Movement of Serbia city councillor Djordje Stankovic said on April 8.

He told BETA that the option to sign online would remain, but that after the holiday petition-signing stands would be set up at multiple locations across the city. "Citizen interest is high. They support us and stress that they would like to see local elections as soon as possible. People are aware that the current government has lost its legitimacy and wish for elections and a new, legitimate government," Stankovic stressed.

He said the People's Movement of Serbia, the Free Citizens Movement, the Green-Left Front, the Freedom and Justice Party, the Dr Dragan Milic Civic Group, the Coalition for Nis and the Democratic Party of Serbia were jointly demanding local elections in Nis. Stankovic recalled that a 30-day deadline was set for signing the petition. The opposition in the southern Serbian city launched the petition signing after the last session of the City Assembly, when Assembly president Igor Novakovic resigned, and Darko Nikolic was elected in his stead.

Opposition councillors did not attend the Assembly session stating that they did not want to lend legitimacy to the ruling majority, rallied around the Serbian Progressive Party.
