Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the former president of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, have lost a strong patron with Viktor Orban's departure from power in Hungary, European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia Tonino Picula has said.

"Orban's H-ungary was for Serbia under Vucic's leadership that European Union member which systematically protected all of Belgrade's destructive policies and prevented the sanctioning of the Belgrade regime in European institutions," Picula told Croatian public broadcaster HRT late on April 16.

He added that "the pages of the tabloids, which are the face of the regime and are under its control, speak best to the Vucic regime's concern."

"These days they are trying very hard to explain how the Hungarian scenario absolutely cannot be repeated in Serbia. That reminds me of someone whistling in the dark because they're scared," concluded Picula, a Croatian MEP from the opposition Social Democratic Party.
