On May 6, the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade categorically denied that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic promised immunity to the Chinese consortium which carried out the renovations of Novi Sad’s Central railway station with regards to the fatal Nov. 1, 2024 concrete canopy collapse.
The Embassy expressed its “strong disapproval and condemnation” of said claims and called on “media and individuals in Serbia to cease disseminating false information.”
“We also call on the citizens of Serbia to remain vigilant and cautious towards actions and statements aimed at undermining the relationship between China and Serbia and hampering cooperation between our two countries, and instead [invite them] to jointly guard the ironclad friendship between China and Serbia,” the statement reads.
The press release comes in the wake of claims made by Vladimir Obradovic, a professor of the Belgrade University School of Organizational Sciences and member of the inquiry committee investigating the accident that claimed 16 lives. According to Obradovic, Vucic promised Ambassador Li Ming that no charges would be levied against any Chinese individuals involved in reconstructing the Novi Sad railway station, nor against the consortium in charge, which Obradovic said served as a “highway for corruption.”
