Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic said on May 15 that Hungarian MOL should respond to Serbia's offer regarding oil company Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) - which it will make by the end of the day on May 15 - by Monday, May 18.
"There is progress in the talks with MOL, but our goal is clear - to protect our economy," the minister told public service broadcaster RTS in Athens, where she is attending an energy conference.
In January of this year, MOL Group signed the main provisions of a Heads of Agreement with Russian Gazprom Neft on purchasing the Russians' 56.15 percent stake in NIS, which is under U.S. sanctions precisely because of majority Russian ownership.
MOL said in April that if it becomes the majority owner, it will keep the Pancevo Refinery in the long term.
According to the license for negotiations issued by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control, the entire process should wrap up by May 22.
