European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has pointed out that the body is fully committed to supporting the Western Balkan countries on their European path.

The Commission is fully committed to supporting the Western Balkans on the European road. It is also committed to making progress in the EU enlargement process by formally opening accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia, Von der Leyen said.

The Commission president stressed the issue of funding of Slovenia's news agency STA and said that she expected Slovenia to quickly find a solution to the problem.

Media freedom is the central element of any democratic society, Von der Leyen said during a July 1 visit to Slovenia, which has taken over the six-month rotating presidency of the EU.

"We need media, free and critical media, as monitors of government activities. That is the essence of democracy," she said.
