Two North Macedonian Mi-8MT helicopters flew into Petrovec Air Base near Skopje on Nov. 1, after having been overhauled by Prague-based maintenance, repair and overhaul company LOM, the Balkan Security Network website reported on Nov. 6.
The Soviet-made helicopters, which landed in Nis for a fuel refill en route to Skopje, will be used for the transportation of people and cargo, as well as for support to the civilian authorities, primarily in extinguishing wildfires. In the near future, North Macedonian aviation will abandon technical equipment of eastern origin, as this year the procurement of four AW149 and A169M helicopters was arranged with Italian Leonardo.
The new helicopters will be added to the arsenal between 2026 and 2028, while in the interim Macedonian aviation will rely on the two freshly overhauled Mi-8MTs. The aircraft were part of a set of four Mi-8MTs which the aviation received from the Ukrainian contingent at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo, in March 2001.
