Montenegro will once again ask Serbia to extradite former State Union of Serbia and Montenegro president Svetozar Marovic, a Montenegrin national who has been sentenced on corruption charges to several years of prison, the country’s Justice Minister Bojan Bozovic has announced.
Speaking for Newsmax TV, Bozovic explained that his ministry will continue talks on the matter with its Serbian counterpart and added that the two institutions have so far collaborated well.
In addition to helming the state union which dissolved in 2006, Marovic spent decades as the closest associate of Milo Djukanovic, the former longtime leader of Democratic Party of Socialists, who headed Montenegro for decades as either president or prime minister.
In 2016, corruption charges saw Marovic sentenced to three years and nine months in prison, after which he fled to Serbia. To date, none of the requests for his extradition have been granted.
