There is no international consensus on the already-changed political approach to Bosnia and Herzegovina, outgoing High Representative Christian Schmidt told Deutsche Welle on May 21.

Schmidt explained he did not decide to resign overnight but also declined to elaborate on the potential pressures leading to this move.

According to him, the international community is divided in its opinion on whether to continue enacting the Dayton Agreement or to adopt a new approach, as well as regarding what role the international community should play in Bosnian-Herzegovinian affairs.

“We all feel the global political situation has changed significantly, has become quite unstable,” Schmidt added.

Schmidt spend his entire term as high representative in conflict with then-Republika Srpska president Milorad Dodik, who claimed Schmidt lacked legitimacy since his appointment was not sanctioned by the UN Security Council and accused the German diplomat of coming to Bosnia-Herzegovina solely to undermine the role and authority of Republika Srpska.
