Sadiq Khan, mayor of London, said on July 3 during a visit to the Potocari Memorial Center that the Srebrenica genocide did not happen overnight, but took as he said, years of dehumanizing Muslims, vilifying them and treating them as “them.”
“Then their neighbors turned against them,” Khan told the Sarajevo portal Klix.ba, adding that the world is now facing “an enormous amount of disinformation and lies, which is why remembering Srebrenica as indisputable, factual history is of crucial importance.”
The London mayor said that “today we live in a time of global tensions,” expressing disappointment with those pursuing divisive politics. “We live in a time of global tensions. When you read the history of this beautiful country, you realize that we have more in common than that which divides us,” Khan said, adding that Muslims and Bosniaks have lived in Europe for hundreds of years and stressing that coexistence and tolerance are the only right path.
