United Group

United Group together with its two subsidiaries had filed a demand for arbitration against Serbia before the Washington-based International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, the group said in a release on March 9.

According to United Group, headquartered in the Netherlands, Serbia has breached several provisions of the bilateral investment treaty with the Netherlands, which established terms and conditions for encouragement and reciprocal protection of investments between the two countries.

“Since 2014, United Group has been the target of a series of arbitrary and discriminatory measures taken by the Serbian authorities and state institutions as part of an intense and orchestrated campaign aimed at reducing the market share of SBB, United Group’s operator in the country, while in parallel promoting the interests of the state-owned telecoms operator Telekom Serbia,” according to a release from United Group.

The Amsterdam-based company has filed a demand for arbitration to protect its investments in Serbia after the Serbian government has failed to respond to an earlier request seeking an amicable dispute resolution.
