In a Feb. 4 crackdown on a crime syndicate, the Serbian Special Anti-Terrorist Unit arrested 19 members of the group headed by Veljko Belivuk, suspected of multiple murders, abductions, extortions and drug trafficking. A collective sigh of relief wafted through Serbia after the arrest of the people whom unofficial sources would not hesitate to describe as extremely brutal, but one of the lurking thoughts might be why now, exactly. How come the police had missed the long list of crimes before? Or, if one would care to elaborate on this point, did the clan, perhaps, owe its criminal triumphs to long-standing ties with government leaders and even members of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s family?
