Serbian–Russian Relations Facing New Challenges

Relations between Belgrade and Moscow have gotten complicated after intensified efforts by the European Union, the U.S. and NATO toward strengthening their presence in the region. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has departed for Russia, for a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, weighed down by dilemmas related to Belgrade’s efforts to “play both cards,” i.e. to maintain equally good relations with both the West and Russia. Both Moscow and Belgrade are making it clear that the relations are not seriously endangered, but the changes that have begun in the region are obviously not in favor of strengthening relations between the two countries.
