Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic’s Democratic Party of Socialists in the Aug. 30 general election lost power after ruling the country non-stop for more than 30 years. Djukanovic, who has been one of the leading or the leading political figure in Montenegro for the same amount of time, remains the head of state until 2023, but his power has undoubtedly been diminished. Fears that a change of government might result in serious shockwaves within Montenegro and in the region have for now turned out to be unfounded, seeing as the future ruling bloc has announced it will not alter the country’s main foreign policy orientation.
