After several months of pressure from environmental groups and opposition parties and movements, the Serbian authorities have declared the end of Rio Tinto’s Jadar Project, which envisaged the construction of the biggest lithium mine in Europe. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic chose to make that move primarily in a bid to avoid the April elections becoming a referendum on Rio Tinto’s project, fearing that this could jeopardize the comfortable majority his Serbian Progressive Party has.
