President Aleksandar Vucic’s televised address to the nation last week did not answer key strategic questions nor whether there would be a turnabout in Belgrade’s foreign policy, but it did hint that there could be certain changes in the future. Vucic said that the country would be more devoted to its European path, but that it would not forsake its friendships in the East, by which he meant Russia and China. This shows that Vucic has not decided to suddenly turn the country toward the West and that he intends to continue his policy of “sitting in two seats” for at least some time, meaning that he will not join EU sanctions against Russia.
