After the Serbian Defense Ministry sent in a proposal and accompanying rationale, in accordance with the Law on defense, the government agreed at a May 4 session that the president and prime minister should dispatch a joint proposal to the parliament to lift the state of emergency, the cabinet said in a press release.

The statement cited the Defense Ministry's proposal to lift the state of emergency as noting that "through the activities of the responsible health organizations and state bodies, active epidemiological control of Covid-19 has been established on the territory of Serbia."

The proposal also noted that, "as a result of applying preventive measures, the epidemic has slowed down and the virus' activity has declined."

"In light of all current parameters, the proposal sent to the National Assembly states that Covid-19 can no longer be considered a disease of significance to public health that represents a danger of the highest order, i.e. a public hazard threatening the survival of the state and its citizens," the government's press release read.

The parliament will vote on this proposal at a special session.
