Political analyst Boban Stojanovic believes that the international community should “sound the alarm” and act on raising the level of democracy in Serbia.

In a statement for BETA Stojanovic said that the Freedom House’s report in which Serbia is no longer listed among democratic countries “is just one in a series of reports that point to [this problem],” adding that the EU should pay greater attention to this matter.

According to him, in Serbia at the moment the Kosovo questions is not the only one of importance, but that "basic freedoms of Serbian citizens" and strengthening democracy in the country should be dealt with, too.

Stojanovic also said that he does not expect the current Serbian government to work toward increasing democracy levels in Serbia, as, according to him, the key objection points in the report are government control of the media and a high number of propaganda media outlets.

"We are all aware of this and that is not something that is going to change", the analyst said. He added that the EU should "finally" put aside other matters and start dealing with the citizens’ freedoms in Serbia.
