In the town of Sremska Raca on Aug. 4, Serbia is commemorating 25 years of the persecution of Serbs from the Serb Republic of Krajina during Croatian Army and police Operation Storm,
According to announcements, the commemoration, titled the Remembrance Day of All Killed and Expelled Serbs in Operation Storm, will be attended by President Aleksandar Vucic and Prime Minister Ana Brnabic.
Operation Storm was launched on Aug. 4, 1995, by units of the Croatian Army, police and the Croatian Defense Council, which attacked the regions of Banija, Kordun, Lika, and northern Dalmatia, that is, the Republic of Serb Krajina.
The day after, on Aug. 5, the Croatian Army entered Knin, which was almost vacated, raising the Croatian national flag, while columns of refugees in passenger cars, trucks and tractors and other vehicles were entering Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
According to the data of the Documentation and Information Center Veritas, during Operation Storm, 1,869 Serbs were murdered, including 1,220 civilians.
Around three thirds of the murdered were above the age of 60 and 551 women were among the victims, the center said, describing this operation as one of the most devastating during the ‘90s civil war in the territory of the former Yugoslavia.
More than 220,000 Serbs were expelled, while the number of the missing persons ranges between 745 and 1,183.
