The Democratic Party of Serbia leader, Milos Jovanovic, said on Oct. 21 that a decision to put an end date on the term in office of a new Serbian cabinet, and to merge the next parliamentary vote with a presidential election, pointed to a deeply flawed democratic system in the country.

"What the decision has unveiled is a necessity of systemic change, which we've been advocating. The process needs to begin with a changed election system, to transform this perverse, partitocratic political system of ours," Jovanovic said to BETA.

Jovanovic also said that as far as the authorities in Serbia were concerned, the move made sense, tactically and strategically. "They are broadening their frontline, while reducing room for manoeuvre for the opposition, which would focus on elections in the capital. It does point to a deeply flawed democratic system in Serbia though."
