Military analyst Aleksandar Radic stated on Oct. 22 that the opening of a representative office of the Russian Defense Ministry was necessary, because the time had come for the key phase of modernization of the Mig-29 warplanes, and added that he did not expect problems with NATO because of that.

Radic told BETA that this might result in complaints from the European Union, which expects the member candidate countries to harmonize their defense and foreign policy with that of the Union.

The analyst added that Russia's military technical assistance was necessary at this time, not only for the maintenance of the helicopters and anti-aircraft missile systems that Serbia has purchased, or for the training of personnel, but also for the comprehensive modernization of the Mig-29 fighter jets which, by all accounts, will be performed in Serbia.
