Petrinja erathhquake (BETAPHOTO/HINA/Edvard SUSAK)
A 4.2 magnitude earthquake hit the area around Petrinja early on Jan. 4, with the shocks felt in Zagreb as well.
According to the Seismological Service of Croatia, the earthquake, whose epicenter was in Petrinja and which shook the entire central Croatia, occurred at 7:49 a.m.. Other quakes had been registered in the same area during the night, the strongest of these, 3.5 in magnitude, striking at 4:20 a.m..
The newest tremors came in the wake of the devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake that had hit central Croatia on Dec. 29, and whose epicenter was also in Petrinja.
The disaster took seven lives and left 27 people injured. The towns of Petrinja, Sisak and Glina, and the surrounding villages suffered great damages, leaving many of the inhabitants homeless. The fact that the ground continues to shake has been causing further distress and difficulties.
Zagreb too suffered some damage, mostly broken chimneys and roof tiles on buildings already affected by the earthquake that had hit the Croatian capital in March 2020.
