U.S. President Joseph Biden congratulated Kosovo's new president Vjosa Osmani on her election and said in a letter that the U.S. would continue to support efforts to secure a lasting peace through productive dialog between Kosovo and Serbia and a comprehensive agreement on normalization hinging on mutual recognition.
"The normalization of relations with Serbia is of vital importance to achieving Kosovo's potential and its full integration with Euro-Atlantic institutions. I know that reaching this objective will demand flexibility and serious compromises and the U.S. will be your partner at every step," Biden wrote in the note which was posted on Vjosa Osmani's Twitter account on Apr. 20.
Biden also said that "I look forward to cooperating" with Osmani "on joint priorities for Kosovo," including strengthening the rule of law, fighting corruption, protecting ethnic and religious minorities, recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, strengthening economic development and securing a sustainable energy future.
