Political Scientist: Montenegrins Have Never Conquer Serbia

A Serbian political scientist, Cvjetin Milivojevic, said on Sept. 6 that Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic's cadres had never tried to conquer Serbia, as the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, stated on Sept. 5.

Milivojevic said in a comment for BETA that the Montenegrins, or the Serbs with Montenegrin roots, who used to hold or were still holding offices in Belgrade and Serbia, had nothing to do with Milo Djukanovic's policy, and had never tried to conquer Serbia.

In a speech aimed directly at President Djukanovic, Vucic said: "Neither you, nor anyone else can conquer Serbia, and you will have to stop conquering it, which you've been trying to do for the past 30 years." Milivojevic says that Vucic felt betrayed, because Djukanovic had never rewarded him properly for the support in Montenegrin elections in 2016.

"In 2016 Vucic played a crucial role in securing Djukanovic's survival in power, when during the Election Day in Montenegro, at about 3 p.m., he said in a televised interview that a coup attempt was under way in Montenegro, in which Serbian and Russian nationals were taking part. The Montenegrin opposition would have won a landslide victory in the election hadn't Vucic heralded the coup, frightening opposition voters," Milivojevic explained, adding that Vucic then saved Djukanovic in the nick of time, but that the motives behind Vucic's direct involvement in the Montenegrin polls, on Djukanovic's side at that, were still unclear.
