The head of the World Health Organization Office in Serbia, Marijan Ivanusa, said on Oct. 22 that the introduction of COVID passes in Serbia sent a message that COVID-19 was becoming an extremely big problem that could get worse.

Ivanusa told the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) that the effect of imposing this COVID-19 countermeasure would be seen in a few weeks.

He went on to say that Serbia was among the top five states in the European region with the biggest number of COVID-19 cases, adding that vaccination could turn the tide of the epidemic. In his words, for the time being there are no data to prove that the Delta Plus variant spreads faster and causes more severe illness than the regular Delta variant.

"We expect that the virus will find the unvaccinated this winter. Hardly anyone will be able to hide from the virus. It may cause severe illness in many," said Ivanusa.

He added that vaccination was the only measure that helped to protect against the virus and said that there were not enough vaccinated people in some states, which put them at a great risk of a serious epidemic.
