A member of the Serbian Progressive Party Main Committee, Dragan Sormaz, has said that the demonstrations in Belgrade in the summer of 2020 "also involved some Russians, Wagner members," adding, "that is a fact, because we arrested them."
He told the May 6 issue of daily Danas that this told him that "many diplomats in the Russian embassy are engaged in activities against Serbia's interests," as well as that "our services have information on that and it would be easy to react in that matter, too."
The EU placed the Wagner Group, which is a private military company, i.e. a paramilitary organization, on its list of sanctions on Dec. 13, 2021.
According to Sormaz, it is in Serbia's interest to impose sanctions against Russia.
"Serbia must be a part of the modern, free, democratic, technologically advanced Euro-Atlantic world. Anything else is a lie and deceit. The citizens will understand," said Sormaz and added that the choice was "between our place in Europe and an Asian despotic state that is dominated by backwardness and poverty."
