Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said late on March 9 that he could not "swear" that Belgrade would not impose sanctions against Russia, but that it had not done so yet thanks to the firmness of the Serbian position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Speaking on a show on Happy TV, Vucic said that for more than a year Serbia "has managed to persevere" in its decision to respect international public law, the U.N. Charter and Ukraine's territorial integrity, but not impose sanctions against Russia due to its own experience from the 1990s.
"I won't swear on the flower and honey, as that children's song goes, that we won't do something, nor can I swear because that would be irresponsible. But the firmness of our position is such that we have not had to do that so far," said Vucic.
He added that Serbia, "because of everything that happened in the 1990s, took a stance that is rational, serious and difficult to maintain" but has managed to keep it so far.
